Wakame are brown marine algae, botanically Undaria pinnatifida
Seaweed is salty. The salt can crystallize out as a white coating and is a sign of naturalness. Crystallized salt is not a reason for complaint.
Preparation for organic wakame seaweed
Wash the wakame under running water, soak in cold water for 5 minutes. Drain and cook in fresh water for 2 minutes (do not use soaking water). The specified iodine content relates to the dried algae. The above preparation reduces the iodine content.
Consumer information on iodine content: Excessive consumption of algae can lead to thyroid dysfunction due to the iodine content. The German Nutrition Society therefore recommends an average daily intake of no more than 200 µg iodine. The maximum daily intake is therefore approx. 1 g = 1 teaspoon of dried algae. It is essential to prepare the product according to the preparation instructions. The iodine content given in the table of nutritional values relates to the dried algae. The recommended preparation reduces the iodine content.
