    The press is full of horrifying images and reports of plastic in the oceans, in birds and fish, deforestation and landslides in the mountains. Of droughts, climate change, the dying polar bears and rising sea levels – who wouldn't want to do something about it?

    Greenwashing – not with us!

    Organic, fair trade, regional, sustainable – these are buzzwords that any company, regardless of what it manufactures or trades, is happy to tout. But mostly, that's nothing more than superficial "greenwashing". This refers to a PR method intended to make a company's public image appear greener and suggest a sense of responsibility – as long as the customer feels good about their purchase. We consciously want to distance ourselves from such superficial greenwashing.


    Miraherba: Our roots lie in the environmental movement

    When we opened our organic shop over 35 years ago, the thick book "Global 2000" was required reading for everyone concerned with ecological issues. Following the "Club of Rome's" findings on "the limits to growth" from 1972, this environmental study was commissioned by US President Jimmy Carter in 1977. It predicted many of the problems we face today: among other things, climate change, some of the environmental issues, and overpopulation.

    For us, it is self-evident that the same rules apply to our online shop Miraherba as to our physical store: We always prioritize trading in certified organic goods, environmentally responsible production of products, and respect for the needs of the people who produce them.


    Sustainability: A long-term sense of responsibility

    Important: The concept of sustainability is not new. This principle of action for resource use is about preserving the essential characteristics, stability, and natural regenerative capacity of the respective system.

    The first use of the term sustainability in the sense of a long-term, conscientious approach to resource use is documented with Hans Carl von Carlowitz in 1713 in his work "Silvicultura oeconomica". Von Carlowitz was concerned with the use of wood and the careful harvesting of forests with a focus on their regrowth.

    As a shipping service provider, we have consciously chosen DPD because this company transports climate-neutrally and continuously works on reducing CO2 emissions.


    Sustainability starts with packaging materials

    We are frequently asked why we at Miraherba pack your teas, rice milk or massage oil so generously in old newspaper and use already-used cardboard boxes instead of opting for new glossy packaging. The reason is simple:

    Important: Mail order requires safe and stable packaging so that your goods arrive undamaged.

    When choosing packaging materials, we opt for cardboard and paper instead of plastic. Some of our shipping boxes have already been used once – they arrived with goods from our manufacturers and wholesalers. Since they are usually very sturdy cardboard boxes, we are happy to use them a second time instead of disposing of them. We mostly use yesterday's newspapers as filling material, which our neighbors enthusiastically collect for us. We also carefully sort and reuse the filling materials we receive in deliveries ourselves, because a glass bottle needs to be carefully cushioned so it arrives safely with you.

    We take particular care with Tetrapaks. These are especially pressure-sensitive and we reinforce them individually at the seams.

    So if your delivery contains an unusually large amount of paper, you can be sure that no additional tree had to die for it and you can easily and environmentally responsibly recycle the packaging. Perhaps you'd like to use it again to ship something or craft something from it.

    We are convinced that the global issues of global warming, the pollution of air, earth and the world's oceans, and the exploitation of increasingly scarce raw materials can only be solved if each and every individual begins to consume consciously and sustainably.
