The traditional wooden pestle (Surikogi) is designed to prevent wear on the ribs.
A kitchen helper you won't want to be without.
… more
The Suribachi and Surikogi first arrived in Japan approximately 1000 years before Christ from China. This mortar was initially used in medicine, and later in the kitchen as well. The grinding bowl is unglazed on the inside and features stable ridges. With their help, spices, herbs and seeds can be easily ground.
Did you know? The highest mountain on the island of Iwo Jima, the Suribachi, is named after this typical kitchen utensil due to its curious shape.
Suribachi - Diameter of ceramic bowl: 18 cm
Surikogi - Length of wooden pestle: 18 cm
Instructions for Use
Place the mortar on a damp towel or rubber mat. Hold the pestle in one hand and rotate it against the ridges. After use, it is sufficient to dry brush the mortar with a brush. You only need to rinse it if you have ground very oily or intensely fragrant spices, from which you want nothing to remain in your next blend.
