Until the high Middle Ages, the coveted myristicin-containing nuts and their flowers came to Europe exclusively via Arab traders. With the discovery of the sea route to India, nutmeg - actually a seed - became one of the most important trade goods for the Portuguese and later the Dutch. Nutmeg was valued as a panacea and strengthening tonic. Freshly grated nutmeg tastes particularly delicious - here you will find whole nutmegs.
