5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan) is an amino acid that is formed in the body from the amino acid L-Tryptophan. L-Tryptophan occurs naturally in various banana varieties, chocolate, and in the seeds of the African black bean (Griffonia simplicifolia). Griffonia simplicifolia is a woody climbing shrub native to West Africa and Central Africa. The plant grows to about 3 meters and bears greenish flowers, followed by black pods that contain the valuable Griffonia seeds. In its native region, Griffonia is regarded as an aphrodisiac. In Europe, however, the plant is primarily known for its high natural content of 5-HTP.

5-HTP is converted into serotonin in the body. Serotonin is one of the key transmitters in the brain, playing a central role in regulating pain perception, sleep-wake rhythm, and mood.
