Meadowsweet is a traditional plant that has been used for centuries in teas and herbal blends.
Details
The name meadowsweet may derive from its use in mead, but also from the sweet scent of its white flowers, which can perfume an entire load of freshly mown hay. This medicinal plant contains precursor substances of salicylic acid. From these, pharmacist Felix Hoffmann first synthesized acetylsalicylic acid in 1897 – a pain reliever that has been used for over a hundred years and remains widely used today.
Caution: If you are allergic to salicylates, you should not take meadowsweet. Pregnant women and asthmatics are also advised to avoid meadowsweet.
Usage
To prepare a cup of meadowsweet tea, pour about one teaspoon of the herb over boiling water and let it steep for 7-10 minutes. Sweetening is not necessary.
