Pippali (Long Pepper) is a spicy black pepper. Together with black pepper and ginger powder, it is used according to Ayurveda to create a famous spice blend - Trikatu.
Studies have shown that adding 10% Pippali increases the bioavailability of curcumin, the active ingredient found in Turmeric. Therefore, adding long pepper is recommended in all dishes that use Turmeric and gives even sweet dishes a spicy note.
You can also get Pippali ground naturally.
Usage
You can use the pepper for seasoning - either add it whole or crush it in a mortar.
Tip: To give herbal tea a bit of a kick, just add a little Pippali to the pot - this gives the tea a fine spiciness and a rounded flavor. Thanks for the tip!
