… more
If you were to conduct a survey in India about what Ashoka is, most people would mention the greatest ruler of ancient India. A ruthless conqueror who subdued other peoples with incredible harshness. After his victory over Kalinga, he became aware of the suffering he had inflicted on people. He converted to Buddhism and subsequently dedicated himself to promoting peace, social standards, and vegetarianism. To this day, a large part of the population in North India lives vegetarian lives.
Less known today is the Ashoka tree, which, growing wild and facing restrictions to its natural habitat, is becoming increasingly rare. Those familiar with it will immediately recognize the Ashoka from February to April, as it produces abundant, brilliantly orange flower clusters that turn red as they wither. Mythologically, the Ashoka tree is connected with femininity. And so it is also recommended primarily to women in Ayurveda. In religion, the Ashoka tree connects Hinduism and Buddhism. According to legend, Queen Maya of Sakya gave birth to Buddha beneath an Ashoka tree. Today, Yakshis beneath Ashoka trees can be found as stylistic elements in both Buddhist and Hindu temples. This establishes a connection between the Ashoka tree and the ancient ruler. In both religions, Yakshis are considered symbols of fertility, who through their touch alone caused the Ashoka tree to bear fruit.
