Mythologically, the Ashoka tree is connected with femininity. And so it is also recommended primarily to women in Ayurveda. In religion, the Ashoka tree connects Hinduism and Buddhism. According to legend, Queen Maya of Sakya gave birth to Buddha beneath an Ashoka tree. Today, Yakshis beneath Ashoka trees can be found as stylistic elements in both Buddhist and Hindu temples. This establishes a connection between the Ashoka tree and the ancient ruler. In both religions, Yakshis are considered symbols of fertility, who through their touch alone caused the Ashoka tree to bear fruit.
