Ashoka
If you were to start a poll in India what Ashoka is, most would say the greatest ruler of ancient India. A cold-blooded conqueror who brought other races to their knees with incredible harshness. After defeating Kalinga, he became aware of the suffering he had brought upon the people. He converted to Buddhism and from then on campaigned for peacebuilding, social standards and vegetarianism. Even today, a large part of the population of northern India is vegetarian.
In 2001, the film Asoka was released in Indian cinemas. Shah Rukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor were huge hits as lovers, and music produced for the film also took India by storm.
Less well known today is the Ashoka tree, which is becoming increasingly rare as it grows wild due to the restriction of its natural habitat. The Ashoka immediately catches the eye of the connoisseur from February to April, because during this time it forms lush, bright orange flower clusters that turn red when withering.
Mythologically, the Ashoka tree is associated with femininity. And so it is also recommended in Ayurveda primarily for women. In religion, the Ashoka combines Hinduism and Buddhism. Queen Maya of Sakya is said to have given birth to Buddha under an Ashoka tree.
Today Yakshis can be found under Ashoka trees as a stylistic element in both Buddhist and Hindu temples. Which establishes a relationship between the Ashoka tree and the rulers of antiquity. In both religions, yakshis are considered a symbol of fertility, which made the Ashoka tree bear fruit simply by touching them.
