The small-flowered willowherb contains beta-sitosterol, various flavonoids and tannins.

Use

To make a cup of willowherb tea, pour hot water over about a heaped teaspoon of herb and leave to infuse for five minutes.

As the tea is bitter but tasty, it is also used as a substitute for black tea in some regions. If you discover some in your garden: The fresh leaves of the willowherb are edible and taste good in a colourful salad.

If you drink willowherb tea every day, take a break after about six weeks. During the following six weeks, you can drink a tea made from a similar herb instead. This measure, which should be taken with all strong-acting medicinal herbs, helps to prevent a habituation effect. The break also prevents undesirable long-term effects.

If allergic reactions or discomfort occur, stop drinking the tea immediately and speak to your doctor or alternative practitioner if necessary.
