cashmere wool
The wool comes from animals that live high up in the Himalayas, at over 3500m in Ladakh. No penned animals, but animals that roam with their shepherds in the barren wilderness of the mountains.
This is where the pretty Kashmir goats live with their long floppy ears and cuddly, warm fur. The goat gives the owner a noble hair, which is many times softer, lighter and warmer than sheep's wool.
At 150 g / animal, the yield is significantly lower than that of sheep and the animal is usually not shorn. Instead, the undercoat is combed out after winter.

The entire manufacturing process, such as washing and sorting, is done by hand.
The finished yarn is traditionally woven by men into beautiful cloths. They work on a complex pattern on wooden looms for up to 4 weeks. Dozens of yarn spindles with dyed yarn lie in front of the weaver, who in days of work lays one stripe on top of the other.
This is how unique towels are created. Even if it is based on the same pattern, each scarf is unique.
We have decided not to 'commission' any specific cloths but to leave the choice to the weavers.
Why we have Indian scarves and shawls in our range
It started with a message from India. India, the country I love to travel to, has moved far away due to Corona and the news moved me a lot: "No work since March" wrote my guide Abdul, with whom I have often traveled to India. No, it wasn't a begging letter, just a brief message about how the people there are doing.
Donating money wasn't a solution, so we wrote to people who had already been with Abdul to place a bulk order for cashmere scarves. Over 50 orders were placed within a very short time, so the goatherds were able to sell their wool, the weavers could operate their looms and Abdul took care of the organization and transport to us. A total of 15 people were suddenly back on the job.
To ensure that this campaign does not remain a one-off support, but that people have a perspective of continuing to earn money, we are now offering the towels in our shop. Most of what a cloth costs goes straight to India, to the people responsible for sourcing the raw material and making it.
