Description
-
The Haritaki sees itself as a tree with healing properties. It grows up to 30 meters in height while its trunk is about one meter thick. Scientifically, the deciduous tree is also referred to as chebulic myrobalans. Its evergreen foliage is striking. Its oval shape ends in a short petiole.
Fruits that are used in Ayurvedic nutrition ripen on the Haritaki tree. For example in the popular mixture Triphala. Before doing so, the fruit must be dried sufficiently. They are then ground into a fine powder. Our Haritaki powder comes from Indian and Sri Lankan fair trade and organic projects.
Origin & Use
You will find the tree in South and Southeast Asia. These include India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Indonesia, Pakistan and Malaysia. It also occasionally occurs in China. The Terminalia chebula likes it dry and prefers to settle on mountain slopes up to 900 meters above sea level.
There is a popular custom in their homeland: the fruits are picked while they are still green and pickled with a little sugar. The whole thing is then boiled to make a syrup. It is interesting that the fruits vary depending on the region. Which is why seven different species are listed to this day. Their names are Putana, Vijaya, Jivanti, Rohini, Amrita, Abhaya and Chetaki. Therefore, when buying, it is important to pay attention to the country of origin of the capsules.
Terminalia chebula is used in a variety of ways in Ayurveda. In addition to the triphala mixture already mentioned, there are other areas of application (homeostatic, antitussive, laxative, diuretic, cardiotonic). Whether and how strong the Haritaki works here has not been sufficiently proven and is mainly based on experience reports.
Ingredients of the Haritaki
Scientists have studied the fruits of Haritaki. They contain a good portion of vitamin C and the amino acid glutathione. It is a very oily fruit with a lot of fatty acids. Paired with glycosides (arjungenin, chebuloside, arjunglucoside) and coumarin.
