What is Amalaki Rasayana?

The term amalaki comes from Sanskrit. It describes the fruit of the Amla tree and translates as: "The fruit in which the deity of prosperity is embodied." The fruit is considered to be the embodiment of Amrita, the immortality potion of the gods. In the ancient Indian Vedas, Amrita is listed as a life-prolonging elixir.

It is therefore hardly surprising that Amla Rasayana, along with Chayvanprash, is the most important Rasayana par excellence. Amalaki is also the most important ingredient in Chyavanprash. You will hardly find anyone in India who has not eaten amalaki at least once. For many Indians, it forms the basis of a healthy diet.

Amalaki contains all five flavours. However, the dominant flavour is sour, astringent and sweet.
