Details
Meadowsweet may have been named for its use in mead, but also for the sweet scent of its white flowers, which can perfume a whole load of freshly mown hay. The medicinal plant contains precursors of salicylic acid. The pharmacist Felix Hoffmann first extracted acetylsalicylic acid from it in 1897 - a painkiller that has been used for over a hundred years and is still widely used today.
Caution: If you are allergic to salicylates, you should not take meadowsweet. Pregnant women and asthmatics are also advised to avoid meadowsweet.
How to use
To make a cup of meadowsweet tea, pour boiling water over about a teaspoon of herb and leave to infuse for 7-10 minutes. Sweetening is not necessary.
